The original owner of this medal bar was possibly Hungarian by birth yet served in the German armed forces. He was an other ranks combat veteran of the Herero Rebellion and the First World War. His Prussian and German medals have precedence on the bar, showing him to be in German service as does his Prussian long service medal. The Austro-Hungarian Iron Cross was instituted in 1916 and was usually for NCOs and other ranks. The Hungarian Commemorative War Medal was instituted in 1929 for Hungarian veterans of the First World War.
