This photographs shows an unknown East African Schutztruppe Unteroffizier wearing the 1896 Khaki Uniform. It is piped in blue and has a single white metallic lace chevron on the upper left arm denoting his rank. The buttons are in white metal with an imperial crown on each and the shoulder straps are twisted wool in the imperial colours. He wears the grey peaked cap matching his home uniform with black leather peak, single imperial cockade and a white hatband and piping for East Africa.

Please contact me here if you have other photographs of the German colonies or the soldiers and sailors that served there. I am especially keen to hear from people with family photograph collections and am always happy to try to assist in identifying uniforms, units, places and dates for family history research.
